An Analysis of E-C Translation Strategies of Subtitles from the Perspective of Skopostheorie——A Case Study of the Film_快乐赛车

摘要

本文旨在从目的论的角度研究翻译策略。通过运用目的论和翻译相关知识,采用定性的方法,对英语电影《沉睡魔咒》中具有代表性的字幕实例进行分析,展示目的论是如何在翻译策略的选择中实现的。本文研究的问题是: 目的论是如何体现在译者对翻译策略的运用上的。具体来说,这三个原则的理论框架是研究字幕翻译如何发挥语言交际作用,和目的论如何在翻译策略的选择中发挥作用的。目的原则强调的是翻译活动的目的,连贯原则关注译文的可读性和可接受性,忠实规则关心的是译文与原文的一致性。可以发现,以下三种策略都是为了实现原文的交际目的,包括意译、归化和直译。由于快乐赛车分析的重点是英文电影的中文字幕,所以在分析语言特征时,快乐赛车将从用词、构词和句子结构等方面来展示翻译策略的运用。本文在目的论的基础上,对形成已久的三种翻译策略进行了论证和阐述。本研究的两大启示是: 一是目的论可以为今后其他类型的英语文学文本研究提供新的视角: 英语电视剧、电影片名、小说;另一方面,本文所分析的翻译策略对评价英语电影字幕的英译质量具有一定的参考价值。

Abstract

This paper aims at studying the translation strategies from Skopos theoretic approach. Through exploiting the theory of Skopos and relevant knowledge on translation, the author employs a qualitative method and applies it to the analysis of the representative examples of subtitles in the English film Maleficent, and displays how Skopos is realized in the choice of translation strategies. The research question is: how Skopos is manifested in translator’s adoption of interpretative strategies. Specifically, the theoretical framework of three principles serves as the direction in the investigation of how subtitle translation acts as language communication and how Skopos functions in selecting translation strategies. The skopos rule involves the purpose of the translation process, the coherence role concerns the readability and acceptability of the target text and the fidelity rule is associated with consistency between the target text and the source one. It may be found that the three strategies are realized as fulfillment to the communicative purpose of the source text. These strategies are free translation, domestication and literal translation. As the analysis focuses on translating subtitles of the English film Maleficent, the adoption of translation strategies will be demonstrated in analyzing the linguistic features in terms of diction, word-formation and sentence structures.

On the basis of the Skopostheorie, this empirical study justifies and elaborates the three long-established translation strategies. Two implications are accomplished in the study: for one thing, the Skopostheorie can provide new insight into future research on other kinds of Chinese version of English literary texts : English TV serials, film titles, novels; for another, the strategies analyzed in this paper may be useful to assess the quality of E-C translation of subtitles of English films.
